S2 Music

The S2 Music course builds on the knowledge gained in S1 and gives pupils further opportunity to create and present music through practical activities.  The pupils will learn skills and techniques when performing, composing and listening that will not only benefit the pupil in music but will help develop the four capacities.

S3 Music

The S3 Music course builds on the knowledge gained in S1/S2 and gives pupils further opportunity to create and present music through practical activities.  The pupils will learn skills and techniques when performing, composing and listening that will not only benefit the pupil in music but will help develop the four capacities. Pupils will be allowed 1 period per week to work on solo performing.  This will give them the chance to push themselves on 2 instruments of their choice and properly prepare them for the demands of the National courses in S4. The second period each week is dedicated to building up listening and composing skills.

NATIONAL 5 ASSESSMENT DEADLINES 2017/18

All pupils sitting National 5 Music must ensure that the following deadlines are met, otherwise they will be not be eligible for presentation.

Each assessment MUST BE PASSED in order to proceed with the course. Failure to meet deadlines will result in a letter home.

Past Papers and Marking instructions

On the blog you will find revision sheets, which you should attempt to complete without the use of your vocab booklet. You can then check your answers against the vocabulary in your booklet or bring your revision sheets in to school to be marked.

You will also find examples of stimuli and a concept mapping sheet. For the second section of your exam you will be required to respond to stimuli and create an idea for a performance in a relatively short space of time. The more practice you get beforehand the better! Pick a stimuli and create a plot in response to it, using the points outlined on the concept mapping sheet to help you.

There are also two past papers (2015 and 2014) and one specimen paper with marking instructions available on http://www.sqa.org.uk/sqa/45714.html which will give you an idea of what you may be asked in your upcoming exam and also what is expected from your responses. If you have purchased the Hodder and Gibson 2015/2016 past paper book you will have access to all past, model and specimen papers. Practice papers are an excellent revision tool so please use them!!

Mrs Radford is available during study leave for additional revision support, please attend school (in uniform) during your usual class times or during lunch if you would like to go over anything prior to your exam.

Section A- The Crucible: Pupils have now read The Crucible. They should continue to thoroughly go through the text and complete revision guides for each character. This includes detailed information on characters personalities, relationships between characters and themes within the text.Pupils should also revise over their research on the Cultural, Social and Historical context that was used for Production skills in Unit 1.

Course structure 
The Course uses an integrated approach to learning which develops practical skills as well as knowledge and understanding of drama (theory). As learners develop their creating skills, they will also learn how to use complex drama skills. Through creating and presenting drama, evaluation skills will also be developed as learners evaluate their own skills and progress, and that of other learners. The Course consists of two mandatory Units and the Course assessment:

  • Unit 1: Production Skills (Internally assessed)
  • Unit 2: Drama Skills (Internally assessed)
  • Course Assessment: (Externally assessed)

Course Assessment

External Examination Paper (40 marks)
The question paper will have two Sections.

Section A
This section will deal with comment on the social, historical and/or theatrical contexts of the studied prescribed text (The Crucible). Learners will be required to demonstrate knowledge of the text and to show an understanding of how the text can be communicated to an audience through performance.

Section B
This Section will take the form of a written analysis of a performance that the learner has seen. This will be from The Cheviot, the stag and the black, black oil or Woman in Black . Pupils will need to attend both performances during the course. Dates to be confirmed.

Preparation for Performance (10 marks)

Preparation for performance will include research on the chosen text and the processes used to reach their acting or directing or design concept for the performance. This will be presented to the examiner on the day of external examination.

Performance (50 marks)

Actors will perform two contrasting roles and each performance will last approximately 7–10 minutes. Directors will conduct a rehearsal with actors which should last approximately 30 minutes. Designers will design a set for their chosen text and choose one other production area to complement this. They will give a presentation lasting approximately 20 minutes. (lighting, sound, properties, makeup, costume or stage management) Performances are assessed by an external examiner on a chosen date.
